Mumbai’s First Submarine Tunnels to Open in November

Posted by

Mumbai will host the opening of India’s first underwater tunnel in November 2023.

The Mumbai Coastal Road Project, which will greatly enhance the city’s transit system, is almost finished. The project, which will cost Rs 12,721 crore, includes India’s first twin tunnel, which is 2.07 kilometers long and runs beneath the Arabian Sea, Girgaon Chowpatty, and Malabar Hill. The tunnels will lie 17–20 meters below sea level and have a diameter of 12.19 meters. Over the course of more than two years, 35 men and a sizable Chinese tunnel boring machine (TBM) were needed to cut through challenging geological strata. By November 2023, the tunnels will be accessible to the public.

Mumbai Coastal Road Project to Significantly Reduce Commute Time

10.58 miles will be covered by the Mumbai Coastal Road Project, which will link Marine Drive with the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The high-speed coastal route is expected to reduce the trip between Girgaon and Worli from 45 minutes to just 10 minutes during rush hour. Six crosswalks—four for pedestrians and two for drivers—as well as three channels each measuring 3.2 meters wide will be included in the tunnels. Near Malabar Hill, the tunnel’s deepest point measures 72 meters.

Largest Tunnel Boring Machine in India

Mavala, a 1,700-ton TBM made by the China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Company Ltd (CRCHI) for the Mumbai Coastal Road Project, is the largest TBM ever built in India. The second tunnel’s boring work started in April 2022 after the first tunnel boring started in January 2021. Mavala made its maiden breakthrough from the Girgaon end in January 2022.

Geopolitical tensions with China and a lockdown were two difficulties the project encountered. To stop seawater from seeping through the cracks between the tunnel’s crown and the seabed, the team regularly sprayed slurry. They had to deal with the threat of the seabed above them collapsing as well. To solve this problem, they sprayed slurry into the cavity right away.

In conclusion, the Mumbai Coastal Road Project, which includes the nation’s first undersea twin tunnel, is expected to considerably upgrade Mumbai’s transport system. By opening in November 2023, the tunnels will provide commuters with much-needed relief and drastically cut down on travel time.
