The Noida International Airport will be connected to Film City by the first pod taxi service to be offered in India by YEIDA.

The projected Film City and the forthcoming Noida International Airport would be connected by the first pod taxi service in India, which will be offered by Yamuna Motorway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA). The ambitious project, which is scheduled to begin soon, recently received approval from the authority, which also changed the detailed project report (DPR).

The pod taxi service will use compact, automated, electric, and autonomous vehicles that can accommodate up to six people at once to provide consumers with personalized rapid transport (PRT). The vehicles will move people to their destinations on demand via a system of elevated tracks known as dedicated guideways.

The road, which will be 14.6 km long, will pass via Handicraft Park, Apparel Park, MSME Park in Sector 29, industrial buildings in Sector 32, Toy Park in Sector 33, and Film City in Sector 21 before arriving at its destination. There will be 12 stops along the route, and pod taxis will move at a top speed of 40 km/h. The full trip will take 20 minutes.

A total of 690 pods will be added to the length over time, with the initial phase including 101 pods with a 6-person capacity.

The project, which is expected to cost roughly Rs 800 crore, will have a 35-year concession period, including the two years needed for construction.

The proposed PRT project, with a length of 14.6 km, is described in YEIDA’s updated DPR for the project, which was created in collaboration with the Indian Port Rail and Ropeway Corporation Limited (IPRRC).

The initiative is compared to five other existing pod taxi projects that have moved more than a billion people each kilometer with just one safety incident. The longest and oldest PRT service is located in Morgantown, West Virginia, and is 13.2 kilometers long. The second-longest PRT system is located at Tianfu Airport in Chengdu, China, and is 9.7 kilometers long. It started operating in 2022.

YEIDA CEO, Arun Vir Singh, said that the bid document (concession agreement and RFP) would be prepared soon so that it could be presented before the bid-evaluation committee. The project will be executed in a public-private partnership mode. The authority expects to invite tenders for the project by June, and if all goes according to plan, the pod taxi service is expected to become operational soon, connecting the airport to the Film City in Noida.
